Messaging Me: Hey, what’s up?

Guys, we’ve got to talk about my biggest pet peeve on this site.

The message: Hey, what’s up?

Listen, I like hearing from you guys, I want to get to know you (though you definitely need to understand that I have a life and get many messages so responses are slow). But there will be nothing that infuriates me more than when you say “hey, how are you” or a variant of that.

Why?

Because you’ve said absolutely nothing. You’ve reached out to me and now you’re putting the burden of the conversation on me. We’ve never talked before so I’m not going to respond with a genuine “Actually, user245 I’m having a bad day, my cat puked and I’m having an existential crisis over my job.”

In modern society it’s basically just a courtesy and now I have to respond with something to keep the convo going. All you’ve shown me is that you’re too boring to say anything more than the most basic phrase, and that you want me to make the conversation work. Tell me about yourself, tell me what you liked on the blog, as me some non sexual getting to know me questions ANYTHING but the dread “Hey, what’s up?”

If I’m on tumblr I’m obviously looking at porn blogs, so don’t be dumb and get creative.

Also, I’m not your kink dispensary. If you message and ask something like “What would you do to me if_?” “What do you like about-?” “Why are you turned on by-?” I know you’re just trying to get me to write out some fantasy to turn you on. So go find someone who rps and leave me alone 🙏

Preach! Putting the burden of conversation on someone you want to talk to who has no reason to talk to you is a one-way ticket to no conversation.
